I went into my watchmakers shop today for a strap and walked out with this. Now it is not mine I am only in charge of research and its sale. From what I have gathered it is 1 out of 20 given to the German naval solders who trained with the royal Italian army in the 40's. Panerai was the primary manufacture of gauges and instruments for the Italian royal navy at the time and was commissioned to build a watch for them that would be visible under water; and since they had no experience building watches they turned to Rolex to build it for them. The ones given to the Germans had no markings on the dial and were called the radiomir (radio-active paint that was used as lume) kampfschwimmer (combat swimmers)

You may ask how I came to have this piece in my possession. And trust me I am still wondering the same thing. An 87 year old man came into the shop and asked my watchmaker to clean it up a bit and see what he could get for it so he could pay his daughter back some of the expenses for his wife's funeral. thinking it might have only been worth at the max a few hundred dollars. My watchmaker had never seen one in his 40 years and when he showed it to me my jaw dropped; I wasn't sure its exact value (until later when I got home) but I knew it was something extremely special! Just its size at 47mm for a watch from 1945, and the way that the case back clamps the whole case together when screwed down; told me that this was no average watch! Oh and the old man paid ONE dollar!!!!!! for it in a yard sale back in the 70's, and had been using it as his faithful hunting watch ever since...Absolutely remarkable!

Les historien her.

Rolex Panerai 3646 Kampfschwimmer the first of its kind. Better pictures added

Men tydeligvis ikke her
